Aged like fine wine’ is a phrase we throw around often. And, it holds true as the older the wine, the finer it tastes. Moreover, there is no dearth of avid wine collectors across the world who wouldn’t mind paying an exorbitant amount in order to get their hands on a bottle of precious liquid glory. So, if you are an oenophile at heart, here’s a list of the finest and the most expensive wines of the world that demand big bucks.
1. Domaine de la Romanee-Conti, Romanee-Conti 1945
When it comes to the most expensive wines in the world, Domaine de la Romanee-Conti, Romanee-Conti 1945 by Burgundy has been auctioned in 2018 for a whopping US $558,000. It has repeatedly set world records at auctions and has incredibly low production levels. However, what further builds the intrigue is the fact that back in 1945, only 600 bottles of this wine flavour were produced and its top vineyard encompasses only 4.5 acres.
2. Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon 1992
Easily costing more than an average home, this is the second most expensive wine in the world that was sold at the Napa Valley auction in 2000 for US $500,000. Aged 60% new oak, this premium vino boasts an opaque purple appearance and carries a subtle aroma of blackcurrant and oak. Screaming Eagle production is extremely low so if you’re a wine connoisseur, it’s time to get on the waitlist.
3. Jeroboam of Chateau Mouton-Rothschild 1945
Not only does this precious 750 ml bottle of wine cost you $310,000 but it also comes with a unique history. The design on the label of the bottle symbolises the victory of the Allied forces in the Second World War. Moreover, it originates from the vineyards of one of the richest families on earth.
4. Cheval Blanc 1947
Priced at $303,375, this wine is titled the ‘best Bordeaux ever made’ and was sold in an auction to an anonymous buyer. What makes it even more interesting is that the flavour was created accidentally due to bad weather conditions. It features a thick texture and a profoundly unique taste that couldn’t be recreated.
5. Shipwrecked 1907 Heidsieck
This luxurious bottle of wine not only carries an excellent flavour but also an exciting story that justifies its whopping $275,000 price tag. The wine was originally created for the last emperor of Russia, Nicolas II. However, the ship carrying the bottles of wine was allegedly torpedoed, causing it to sink into the bottom of the ocean for over 80 years. Later in 1997, 2000 intact bottles were retrieved from the wreckage.

Not all wines start out as expensive. However, a few tangible and intangible factors such as the raw materials, the branding, winemaking costs, bottling, vintages and much more decide the value of these beauties. The overall growing demand for fine wines has also lead to the well-deserved success of the wine investment industry. So, if massive price tags do not make your jaw-drop in surprise, it is time to evoke the wine connoisseur in you.
